Since they haven’t made RT4WD Civic wagons in 24 years, my other half is looking for a decent mid-size SUV. She really likes the Ford Flex, but there are almost none available in my area, and the few I’ve found are way out her price range (around $35k max). The Honda Pilot is looking tempting as an alternative, and there are lots of those around, so we’re probably going to check one out today as an alternative. A king cab Tacoma is another possibility, but she’d prefer the flexibility of an SUV.

What are Oppo’s thoughts? What are we missing out on? Basically it needs to be big enough for her, me, her two boys and all the stuff that goes with them, able to carry everything we need to Pennsic (roof racks are a must for the large tent poles), and have enough towing capacity to pull a rally car behind it someday. Hey, if she’s going to spend this much money, let’s plan ahead.

Basing this on my friends Ridgline, which I believe is mechanically similar: The honda should be fine for day to day stuff but it was a bit underpowered while towing my hobie cat (~900 lbs boat and trailer) in he Sierras; you'd probably have issues towing a rally car, I'd reckon. As for the Taco, as the ow gee of a 1st generation, I can't recommend them enough...

If she gets a truck, it’ll be a Taco king cab, no question. I’ve also pointed out that $35k would get her a very nice Taco, but only an EX or LX Pilot (which is still very nice). The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, and has a 280hp V6, so I don’t think power for towing would be an issue. Of course, power isn’t everything when it comes to towing.

I’d say Taco and a camper top with a manual...

Or a Frontier Crew with V6 and a manual... And a camper top.

You guys have no idea how much I love my Civic Wagon 4WD.

My parents bought it new in 91 and it only have 91k miles. It was my first car and although driving a bright red civic wagon in high school wasn’t the coolest thing, I still had way more fun than all my spoiled friends and their 3-Series and C-classes. It hasn't gotten much use since the mid 2000s when I bought my first real car (C55 AMG). Now it just sits in my garage and waits until winter when the AMG becomes unsafe to drive. I love it more than I love my AMG or my Wife’s Q5 and that's saying something.

The pilot has lots of storage space. It’s reasonable good on gas and is great for trips. There's still a lot of room even with the third row up which is actually useable. Keep in mind that the 4wd pilot can tow more than the front wheel drive.

Dad owns a Acura MDX (fancy pilot) and although he likes it, he wishes he had gone with the Dodge Durango. Its also giving him transmission issues at 55k miles.

You could always go used suburban or expedition. That deffently has towing power and enough space for everything. Or go used diesel ML or diesel Touareg

At the time I asked this she wanted new, but has since warmed up to the Doug DeMuro method of used with a good warranty, since a warranty is her major reason for wanting new in the first place. So what you suggest would work in that case.
